CARSON, Calif. (AP) Major League Soccer has appointed Nelson Rodriguez as president of Chivas USA.

The league announced Wednesday that Rodriguez will operate the club until a new ownership group is finalized. The league bought Carson-based Chivas last week from Jorge Vergara and Angelica Fuentes, who took control in mid-2012.

Rodriguez has been with the MLS league office for 14 years, most recently as executive vice president of competition, technical and game operations.

Chivas USA had the second-worst league record and worst attendance last year, and it was hit by several lawsuits alleging that it discriminated against non-Latinos.

MLS says it wants to sell the team to a new ownership group that's committed to building a new stadium and keeping the team in Los Angeles.
