Yokohama midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura says he will play in Japan's World Cup warm-up against Serbia on Wednesday despite injuring his ankle on the weekend.

Nakamura left midway through the first half of Yokohama's 2-1 loss to Shimizu S Pulse in the J-League on Saturday after taking a kick to his left foot.

"It's not as bad as I thought," Nakamura told Monday's Nikkan Sports newspaper. "There is still some pain there but I think I'll be ready by game time."

MRI scans showed no fracture or ligament damage.

The 31-year-old playmaker, who returned to Japan after this season after eight years playing in Europe, is expected to play a key role for the national team at the World Cup.
