Adrian Mutu struck twice in the second half as Cesena beat Genoa 2-0 for their first home triumph of the season.

The Romanian forward put the hosts ahead in the 70th minute from the penalty spot before adding his second 10 minutes from time.

The result was Cesena's second victory of the campaign and lifted them into 19th place, two points from safety.

Genoa went into the encounter at the Dino Manuzi stadium looking for their first win on their travels since September 18.

And they had the first chance early on when Miguel Veloso's drive from 30 yards was kept out by Cesena goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli.

On the half-hour mark, Mutu's drive from outside the area was saved by Genoa goalkeeper Sebastien Frey.

Genoa should have gone in front before the break but Antonioli did well to clear Rodrigo Palacio's right-footed strike from 12 yards.

Cesena showed more determination after the break and threatened in the 53rd minute.

Dominique Malonga surged inside the area and fired towards the far post but his effort was kept out by Frey.

Cesena then broke the deadlock. Emiliano Moretti brought down Erjon Bogdani inside the area and the referee pointed to the spot.

Mutu hit the spot-kick towards the centre of goal and beat Frey.

Genoa failed to react and Cesena grew in confidence and doubled their lead when Mutu got past his marker and struck the ball right-footed from 25 yards towards the top right corner of the goal and out of Frey's reach.
