Moyes impressed by Vellios

Vellios scored his second goal in six appearances off the bench this season when he netted a late consolation for the Merseyside outfit in last weekend's 3-1 Premier League defeat at Chelsea. Moyes - whose team travel to Fulham on Sunday - admits the 19-year-old Greek is staking a claim for a starting berth, but is wary of putting too much responsibility on Vellios too soon. Asked how far away Vellios was from earning a place in the first XI, Moyes said: "He has got a possibility - he has scored goals and we are lacking goals at this moment in time. "In short bursts, he has done very well. "But he is young and it would be asking a lot at the moment. "We see him every day in training and we can see what he is capable of and what he is not. "He is certainly getting closer, because we need to get some goalscorers in the team. "Tolos has come on and got us a couple of goals off the bench, but that might just be the best way for him until he gets a little bit more experienced and little bit more used to it." Moyes is pleased to see competition within his squad, something that Vellios' progress has contributed to. "We've got competition," Moyes said. "We've got John Heitinga not in the side at the moment because of Sylvain (Distin) and (Phil) Jagielka - we have people who are quite capable of coming in. "We all want that and I'd like more competition in other areas." Somebody who has found themselves in and out of the team recently is club captain Phil Neville, back on the bench for the last two games having regained his starting spot for the Carling Cup win over West Brom and the league defeat at Manchester City. The 34-year-old is conscious of setting the right example and has vowed to work hard in training without kicking up any fuss, exactly the sort of reaction Moyes is looking for. "I wouldn't have expected anything else, and I don't think you would from any professional, not just Phil," Moyes said. "If you are not in the side, your job is to buckle down and look to get your place back." James McFadden is also aiming to break into the side having rejoined the Toffees earlier this week, returning to the club he left for Birmingham in 2008. McFadden, who arrived on a free transfer, has not played a competitive game in over a year due to a serious knee injury and looks unlikely to make his second Everton 'debut' in Sunday's match as he continues to work his way back to fitness. His condition is being closely monitored by Moyes, who is backing the 28-year-old forward to come into the reckoning for Scotland again if he can rediscover his old form. "Undoubtedly he will get back towards the Scotland squad if he performs," Moyes said. "That is for James to do, and I think he has 48 caps now, so I'm sure he will be desperately trying to get to 50."
