The English Football Association has charged Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho with improper conduct following a touchline confrontation with a referee during a Premier League match.

Mourinho was ordered from the touchline in the 70th minute of Chelsea's 4-1 win over Cardiff on Saturday after taking exception to referee Anthony Taylor warning defender Branislav Ivanovic over time-wasting at a throw-in. Mourinho sat among fans for the rest of the game.

The FA said in a statement released Monday that Mourinho has until Thursday to respond to the charge.

Mourinho lost his temper after being frustrated at perceived time-wasting by Cardiff earlier in the match. He didn't attend the post-match news conference.
