Borussia Moenchengladbach striker Luuk de Jong will be out for six weeks after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

The Bundesliga club says the 22-year-old Dutchman was hurt in the second half of Thursday's 2-0 Europa League win over Marseille following a ''studs-up'' challenge from Joey Barton.

An operation was deemed ''unavoidable,'' with team doctor Stefan Porten conducting arthroscopic surgery on Friday.

De Jong has scored three goals across all competitions for Moenchengladbach following his offseason move from FC Twente.
