Emanuel Villa scored a late equalizer to help Cruz Azul salvage a 1-1 draw against Guadalajara in the Mexican Clausura championship on Saturday.

Marco De La Mora scored for Guadalajara with a shot from the edge of the box at the end of the first half, shortly after Cruz Azul defender Diego Cervantes received a red card for downing Erick Torres in front of the goal.

Despite being a man down, Cruz Azul got the equalizer from Villa in the 83rd.

"I would say that apart from the pride they showed, they played better than Guadalajara and based on that, the draw was deserved," said Cruz Azul coach Enrique Meza.

Both clubs are still in a good position to qualify for the playoffs with 25 points each. Chivas is second in Group 1 and Cruz Azul is third in Group 3.

The 18 teams in the Mexican Primera Division are split into three groups with the top two qualifying for the playoffs. The two best-placed clubs in the general table that don't qualify from the groups also progress to the knockout phase.

Elsewhere Saturday, San Luis won 3-1 at Santos, Atlas beat Chiapas 2-0, Pachuca drew 1-1 with Queretaro and defending champion Monterrey was held to a 1-1 draw at home against Puebla.

League-leading UNAM Pumas won 1-0 at Necaxa on Friday.

So far, only three teams have been guaranteed places in the playoffs: Pumas, Morelia and UANL Tigres.
