Humberto Suazo and Aldo De Nigris scored first-half goals to give Monterrey a 2-1 win against Necaxa in the Mexican Apertura on Saturday.
The win moved unbeaten Monterrey ahead of Cruz Azul atop the general standings. Cruz Azul hosts derby rival America on Sunday.
Santos had a 2-0 win against defending champion Toluca, while San Luis won 1-0 at home against UANL Tigres. Atlanta hosted Pachuca in the day's late game.
Monterrey's Suazo scored in the 13th minute after Jesus Zavala had battled for the ball on the right and pulled a pass back across the area. Aldo De Nigris added a second in the 27th, heading in from close range after Luiz Perez thundered a shot across the crossbar which bounced up off the goal line. Perez had been found in the area by a clever Walter Ayovi through ball.
Pablo Quatrocchi scored a 90th minute consolation for Necaxa.
Suazo's goal was his 10th of the season since returning to Monterrey after a six-month loan spell with Spanish club Real Zaragoza.
The win gave Monterrey 22 points, a point ahead of Cruz Azul and Santos. Monterrey also stays ahead of Santos in Group 1, one of the qualification tables for the end-of-season playoffs.
"It was an even match, we have to keep working (to stay unbeaten)," said De Nigris. "The important thing is to keep winning and concentrating on the championship."
Necaxa stayed on 10 points, bottom of the percentage table that decides relegation at the end of the season.
In Torreon, Santos' Jose Cardenas scored in the 38th minute and then supplied the pass for Christian Benitez' goal.
Benitez, who returned to Mexico this season after a spell with Birmingham City in England, scored in his fifth match in a row to move to 11 goals atop the scoring chart.
Toluca had previously gone eight matches without losing but stayed top of Group 2 with 16 points.
San Luis moved level with Toluca after Othoniel Arce scored just after half time to earn a 1-0 home victory against Tigres, the side's fourth win in five games.
Tigres lost for the third time in four to stay on 12 points behind city rival Monterrey and Santos in Group 1.
