Chelsea has signed Raul Meireles from Liverpool on a four-year contract.

The Portugal midfielder handed in a transfer request at Liverpool shortly before the summer transfer window closed at 2200 GMT Wednesday.

With Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish having strengthened his midfield with the signings of Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing this summer, Meireles found limited first-team opportunities at Anfield this season.

So far, the midfielder made two appearances in the league, one as a substitute when he came on against Arsenal to inspire Liverpool to a 2-0 victory at Emirates Stadium.

The 28-year-old Meireles, who only signed for the northwest club a year ago from FC Porto for €14 million ($18 million), is currently sidelined with a collarbone injury.
