Birmingham manager Alex McLeish has refused to rule out bringing a 'marquee' signing to St Andrew's during the January transfer window.

Brum have money to spend on signings following Carson Yeung's takeover, although the team have been performing superbly this season.

Birmingham were promoted last summer and tipped for a season of struggle, but they currently sit eighth in the table having secured 32 points from their opening 20 matches.

McLeish is not planning on spending Yeung's entire transfer kitty in the January window and insists he will not bring players to St Andrew's if they will not improve the quality in his squad.

Brum have been linked with Liverpool's Holland international winger Ryan Babel and the Scottish tactician is not ruling out breaking the club's transfer record if needed.

"I still don't think we have to spend £20million, £40million or whatever was quoted at the time," he told the Birmingham Mail. "But I have got to bring other players in and I will try and maintain the quality that we have seen since the start of the season.

"I don't think there's any point in bringing players who are not as good as what we have, or I think who are not potentially as good as what we have.

"You don't progress doing that. We will do a lot of continued diligence and try and enhance the character of the dressing room.

"We won't rule out a marquee signing, if there is someone out there who I think can make a huge difference to this team, I can't rule it out.

"We would try if we could but, again, there has got to be a cut-off point."
