Fans chanted 'You're are getting sacked in the morning' and 'You don't know what you're doing' during the 2-2 draw with Swansea last weekend. There was a more civil atmosphere at a half-empty Molineux for Wednesday night's Carling Cup clash with Manchester City, who triumphed 5-2 in a match where both sides made many changes. McCarthy said: "If anyone wants to suggest that I've fallen out with the fans who were making themselves heard on Saturday, it is quite the opposite. "I just think they have let me and the players down. I would make it clear those words are only directed at the fans who were vocally negative towards me and the team on Saturday. "I have had wonderful support from the majority of fans from the day I arrived at Molineux and I thank those who have done so again since the weekend." McCarthy is justifiably proud of his record as a manager during the past two decades. He said: "By next March I will have been a manager for 20 years. I've got all the coaching qualifications I can own. "I've won the Championship title twice with two different teams and I took the Republic of Ireland to the last 16 of a World Cup finals. "I came here five years ago when the club was at a very low ebb and fearing a fight against relegation. "Since then we've won promotion as champions and are now in our third consecutive season in the Premier League - arguably the most competitive league in the world. "But we are having a tough time at the moment and it's now more than ever that we need the support of the fans and for all of us to stick together to help us prosper as a team." Wolves midfielder Jamie O'Hara, who scored for the second successive match against City, has given his backing to McCarthy. He said: "I don't think the manager deserves that sort of stick to be honest. He is a fantastic manager, been here five years and every year has been a successful season. "I think it's a bit harsh to get the reception he got at the weekend. The fans are frustrated and want the team to be doing better. "But looking at the table, there are still a lot of clubs down there on single figure points and one win can shoot you straight up the table." McCarthy will adopt a positive attitude when Wolves tackle City again at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday in a league encounter. He said: "We will do our level best and it's not a gimme that they will beat us on Saturday. "We won't go there with any trepidation, we will go and play the game and see. "We can just plan to play well and do our very best. They are a team who are on a high, and are difficult to contain at the moment, but we will just do our very best to stop them. "We will go there and have a go at them again."
