Rooney escaped any punishment as referee Mark Clattenburg took no action at the time apart from awarding a free-kick to the Latics. The Football Association later confirmed the matter would not be taken any further after receiving Clattenburg's report. Wigan manager Roberto Martinez was adamant after the match that Rooney should have been sent off, but McCarthy would now prefer to let things lie. The midfielder is instead focusing on his team's battle to avoid relegation ahead of the trip to Manchester City this Saturday. "The manager Roberto Martinez told me not to worry, keep working hard and hopefully we can stay in the league," McCarthy said in The Sun. "It looks a lot worse on the telly but these things happen in football. You just have to dust yourself down and get on with it." McCarthy admits that he had been unaware of the fact that Rooney did not receive a card for the incident. He said: "I didn't know to be honest. It was just a heat-of-the-moment thing."
