Martinez wants home comforts

Latics have the fewest number of home victories in the Premier League this campaign, with fans at the DW Stadium watching them take maximum points on just two occasions. With the exception of Blackpool, Martinez's side have also picked up the fewest number of points on home soil with 12, and other than Birmingham, have scored the fewest goals at home, with 11. Martinez is aware they are statistics that have to change, starting with Tuesday night's visit of Aston Villa. "The level of performance at home has been really good. We really enjoy playing in front of our fans and the environment they create," said Martinez. "So we've a really good feeling at home, but we have to look after the scorelines when the performances are good. "I feel that we've drawn too many games we should have won, which is something we need to improve and change. "It's about developing our know-how, learning from our experiences, and that is something we're going to have to show in the next seven matches at home. "That is very important going into the last third of the campaign." With Wigan collecting just 22 points from their 23 matches overall so far to leave them in the drop zone in 18th place, Martinez also feels the safety bar could be far higher than recent seasons. Last season, 31 points would have been good enough for survival; at the end of the 2008-09 campaign it was 35, whilst the previous year it was 36. "I think there are going to be so many twists and turns between now and the end of the season, which is going to be fascinating for everyone," added Martinez. "But you feel you are going to need more points than was the case last season, probably closer to the 40-point mark this time around. "It's hard to tell because there are so many games between the sides fighting for the same aim, and that's going to have a massive bearing on how many points are going to be needed. "From one week to another I'm sure there is going to be a lot of movement and a lot of changes in the table. "We just need to find a level of performance and confidence in our play, to remain focused and clear in what we need to do for the remaining 15 games." Skipper Gary Caldwell serves a one-match suspension following his dismissal at Arsenal on Saturday, while another centre-back, Antolin Alcaraz, is out for two weeks with a soft tissue injury. Midfielder James McCarthy, however, is poised to figure after a three-month lay-off with an ankle problem.
