Mathieu Valbuena scored a stunning late winner Tuesday as Marseille recovered from a two-goal deficit to overcome Borussia Dortmund 3-2 and reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

Trailing 2-1 with five minutes of regulation time left and needing to win to advance, Marseille leveled through winger Andre Ayew's header before Valbuena dribbled into the box and unleashed a curling shot over goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller in the 87th.

That gave Marseille the runner-up spot despite Olympiakos beating Group F winner Arsenal 3-1 in the other match.

''Football is magnificent when you win,'' Marseille coach Didier Deschamps said. ''You have to believe until the end. What we did was exceptional.''

Dortmund, the Bundesliga champion, had led 2-0 by the 32nd minute but finished a disappointing campaign with only one win.

Needing to win by at least four goals to have a chance of advancing, Dortmund controlled the game from the start.

Jakub Blaszczykowski put Dortmund ahead in the 23rd after a long throw-in by Lukasz Piszczek, Robert Lewandowski laying on the ball for the Poland midfielder to slot the ball inside the far post from 12 meters out.

Dortmund doubled the lead from a penalty converted by defender Mats Hummels after Marseille defender Stephane Mbia had tried to clear a ball but instead hit captain Sebastian Kehl in the face with a recklessly high foot.

Kehl was carried off with his face covered in bandages and was taken to a hospital. Dortmund officials later said Kehl's face was swollen but didn't have any broken bones.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half, Marseille stunned Dortmund with a goal against the run of play. Morgan Amalfitano crossed from the right and Loic Remy scored with a diving header.

''We really flopped in the first half and we could have conceded even more goals,'' Deschamps said. ''But Remy's goal got us back into the match. Still, it was Valbuena's goal that was the most important.''

Valbuena's goal came two minutes after Ayew had scored with an unchallenged powerful header from a corner by Amalfitano.

''We really should have avoided conceding that goal late in the first half,'' Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. ''They raised their game significantly in the second half and we played worse.''
