Mexico defender Rafael Marquez has been left out of the squad for a friendly against Serbia next week.

The 32-year-old Marquez, who plays for New York Red Bulls and captained Mexico at the 2010 World Cup, joined Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela in missing out on a place in the 20-man list announced on Thursday.

Coach Jose Manuel De La Torre gave no official reason for their omission.

Mexico lost 2-1 at home against Brazil in its previous friendly last month.

De La Torre has called up seven Europe-based players, including Javier Hernandez of Manchester United and Giovani Dos Santos of Tottenham Hotspur.
