A late goal from Antonio Valencia allowed Manchester United to snatch victory against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Valencia fired a low shot past Igor Akinfeev from close range, his first goal in the Champions League, just four minutes from the final whistle to seal the points and give United a 1-0 win to maintain its perfect record in Group B.

United dictated the pace for most of the game, with the hosts intermittently threatening in an edgy encounter.

CSKA's Alan Dzagoev had the ball in the net in the 54th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

United has nine points from three games to top the group, with CSKA third on three points. Wolfsburg, also on three points, plays Besiktas later Wednesday in the other group match.

"We wanted to go for a surge through the middle rather than in the wide positions and I think that worked quite well," Ferguson said. "We had some good chances at the end of the day, we improved our goalscoring chances and we're pleased Antonio Valencia has got a good goal."

With time slipping away, Berbatov flicked on a deep Nani cross from the left. Valencia took a touch and fired across the goal from a tight angle into the net.

"Of course we could expect a difficult game. We tried to look for chances ... but in the last 10 minutes fatigue set in and didn't allow us what we deserved," said CSKA coach Juande Ramos.

United dominated most of the first half - coming closest in the 26th minute, when Paul Scholes' bouncing drive from 25 meters was awkwardly parried by Igor Akinfeev.

Winger Milos Krasic was CSKA's most threatening player, firing a low shot past Edwin van der Sar's goal in the 34th minute after beating two United defenders down the right flank.
