A Sicilian court has sentenced a man to 11 years in prison in the
killing of a policeman during riots following a football game three
years ago.
Italian news agencies ANSA and Apcom reported Monday that the
23-year-old Daniele Micale was sentenced for his role in the
killing of the police officer, Filippo Raciti, after a match
between Catania and Sicilian rival Palermo.
Another defendant, Antonino Speziale, was sentenced last
month to 14 years by a juvenile court because he was a minor at the
time of the incident.
Micale's lawyers maintained that their client is innocent and
that they would appeal the sentence.
Raciti's death prompted Italian authorities to re-examine
security at matches, but games are still often marred by violence.
