Malaysia captain Safiq Rahim scored one goal and made the other as Malaysia beat Taiwan 2-1 in the first leg of a 2014 World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.

Safiq opened the scoring in the 28th minute, the midfielder pouncing on a loose ball and curling home a shot from the right side of the area at Kuala Lumpur's National Stadium.

The hosts outplayed Taiwan for long periods and extended their lead in the 54th minute when Safiq sent over a corner and Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak outjumped two defenders to nod home.

However, a lapse in concentration saw Taiwan midfielder Chen Po-liang score from close range with 14 minutes left.
