Newcastle United has confirmed the signing of Italian fullback Davide Santon, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old former Inter Milan defender has signed a five year deal with the Magpies, moving on Tyneside for an undisclosed fee.

"He is a quality left-back and an established international who also gives us flexibility in defense," manager Alan Pardew said.

"Davide is a young lad and a great signing for us and I am sure he will adapt to the Premier League very quickly."

Santon was part of scudetto-winning teams in 2008-10 and 2009-10 and contributed to the side that won the UEFA Champions League in 2009-10.

Last season, after the departure of manager Jose Mourinho, Santon saw less playing time at the San Siro and was eventually loaned out to AC Cesena.

For Newcastle, Santon expects to play more, looking forward to performing in front of the Magpies' large home crowds.

"I am really pleased to sign for Newcastle. The chance to play in the Premier League and in front of 50,000 fans at St. James' Park was too good to turn down.

"This is an ambitious club who want to move forward and I want to help them achieve that."
