Lopez backs Latics to stay up

The Latics were beaten 1-0 by the UEFA Champions League hopefuls and remain bottom of the table, four points adrift of safety. Lopez made his debut in the game at Eastlands and, after coming through his Premier League baptism, the Spaniard feels he saw enough from his team-mates to know they can survive. "I'm happy to have made my Premier League debut, and I thought it went okay," he told the Wigan Observer. "The gaffer told me on the morning of the game I was playing and I was so excited to get my chance. "Obviously I was disappointed with the result, though, and it has left a bitter taste in my mouth. "I think we put in a good performance as a team and I feel we deserved something out of the game. "There are nine matches left and, if we carry on working hard in training and showing the same level of performance on a matchday, I'm optimistic we can pick up enough points to stay in this division."
