Germany coach Joachim Loew will decide whether to take Kevin Kuranyi to the World Cup in the next fortnight.
Loew met with his coaching team for three days of talks this week and the subject of Kuranyi was discussed.
The Schalke striker has not figured for the national team since leaving the squad during the half-time interval of their World Cup qualifier with Russia in October 2008.
Loew immediately banned Kuranyi from all future international matches "for as long as I remain in charge", but the striker's form this season, in which he has scored 18 times, has prompted a reassessment of that stance.
"I am aware of my responsibility as the national team coach," said Loew on the German Football Association's website.
"But we will not let ourselves be affected by public pressure. We will watch the next few games and make an announcement at the end of April."
Kuranyi therefore has two more games to prove to Loew that he belongs in the national team and further goals against Borussia Monchengladbach this weekend and Hertha Berlin a week later may make it impossible for Loew to ignore him, particularly when two of Loew's other options, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski, have scored only two goals each all season.
