Liverpool to begin $150 million stadium expansion at Anfield next year
LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool will start the $150-million expansion of Anfield early next year after plans to build a new stadium were thwarted in recent years by financial and ownership disputes.
The Premier League club says the addition of 8,500 seats in the Main Stand will take Anfield's capacity to around 54,000.
Chairman Tom Werner says ''we have made more progress in the past two years than in the last decade.''
Fenway Sports Group, which also owns baseball's Boston Red Sox, bought Liverpool from feuding American businessmen Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. in 2010.
The expanded stand will feature three tiers, incorporating a remodeled existing lower tier. Building work is set to finish during the 2016-17 season.
There are also plans to add 4,800 seats in the Anfield Road Stand.
