PARIS -- Uruguay forward Diego Rolan scored the winner as Bordeaux beat Saint-Etienne 1-0 on Sunday to edge closer to fourth place in the French league.

Rolan ran onto a cross behind the Saint-Etienne defense in the 42nd minute and sent the ball low past goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier for his seventh league goal of the season.

Rolan almost got a second goal in the 60th when he went clean through but hit the post after clipping the ball neatly past Ruffier.

Bordeaux remains sixth but is only one point behind fourth-place Saint-Etienne.

Meanwhile, Guingamp continued its resurgent form with a 2-0 win at last-place Metz to move up to eighth.

Even with top scorer Claudio Beauvue rested, Guingamp proved far too strong for a lackluster Metz side and scored twice in the first half through striker Christophe Mandanne and midfielder Jeremy Pied.
