Bayer Leverkusen says Switzerland midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta likely will be out of action for several weeks after injuring his right knee.
Leverkusen says Barnetta will need an operation. He injured his knee in a friendly against second-division Bochum on Tuesday.
Barnetta says the setback is ''annoying, but it can't be changed.''
Leverkusen is fourth in the Bundesliga, 13 points behind leader Borussia Dortmund.
