Bayer Leverkusen has initiated legal proceedings against unidentified supporters after lit flares landed among its fans during a Bundesliga game.

The club says in a statement it has lodged a complaint with the state prosecutor in Duesseldorf and that video evidence is being examined to identify two masked perpetrators among others responsible for the incident at Fortuna Duesseldorf's stadium on March 30.

Leverkusen says pyrotechnics were set alight in an upper tier of the visiting fans' block shortly after kickoff, but fell onto supporters below, risking serious injury.

Leverkusen called for the perpetrators to be identified and given nationwide stadium bans, adding that they will be held liable for any fine the German football federation decides to impose.
