Latics duo in confident mood

Many critics were quick to write the Latics off when they slumped to the foot of the table on the back of eight straight defeats. It was suggested that Roberto Martinez had got his tactics wrong, with Wigan trying to play too much football for a side locked in a relegation battle. The Spaniard has stuck to his guns, though, and has seen his faith rewarded with seven points from the Latics' last four outings. They are now within two points of hauling themselves out of the drop zone, and Republic of Ireland international McCarthy believes they are capable of taking that next step. "The main thing is that we are not worried," the highly-rated midfielder told Sky Sports News HD. "We know we are good enough to stay in the Premier League. We have got a good enough squad and it is just about putting a good enough run of results together to kick us up that table. "I think it's just a matter of time if we keep playing, keep passing the ball. I'm sure we will kick on." McArthur is also of the opinion that Wigan can preserve their top-flight status in the right manner, by ignoring calls for a change in approach. He said: "I think it happens every season. We go on a bad run and we are down at the bottom and everyone says the manager must change the style of play. "But we keep playing that way and we have got a belief in our play. We keep picking up results and hopefully we can keep doing that."
