The 34-year-old saw Wanderers fall out of the top half of the table due to a poor end to their impressive campaign, and feels a lack of strength in depth was the key. The England international said: "It was disappointing, but it wasn't just Sunday (final game of the season, Bolton 0-2 Manchester City), it was the last five games really. All of a sudden the table makes it look like it's not been such a good season for us. "We feel the club is heading in the right direction. But we've got to realise that the season goes for 38 games and we've got to start pushing all the way. "The squad isn't that strong, I don't think, but we have got young players coming through. "Young Josh Vela was on the bench against Manchester City and that's encouraging. Adam Blakeman was in the squad too. Those signs are good."
