Kean: Emotional week ahead

Tributes have poured in following Speed's death on Sunday at the age of 42. Blackburn are in the Welsh capital on Tuesday evening to take on Championship outfit Cardiff in the Carling Cup quarter-finals, before hosting Swansea in the Premier League on Saturday. Kean said: "I think there will be emotion at both of those games, and for the next few weeks for those clubs. "Gary was a proud Welshman, and at clubs he has had connections with, I'm sure it will be in the front of everybody's mind." The news of Speed's death left Kean stunned. "It is shocking news," Kean said. "I only spoke to him on Thursday and I'm still stunned. We have got a young Welsh player, Adam Henley, and I spoke with Gary about coming up to have a look at him, and he was going to do that next week. "I had a chat with him on the phone and he was quite bright and bubbly. When I heard the news it was just shocking. "I spoke to Chris Coleman (who Kean has assisted at various clubs and was a team-mate of Speed's for Wales), who he was very close with, on Sunday night and he was stunned. He was out in Greece and he didn't know." Despite the sad backdrop to Tuesday's game, Kean is confident the players will be able to focus on their jobs once the contest gets under way. "I think before the game, people will be very emotional," Kean said. "But when the game starts, because there is so much concentration required, I think people subconsciously put that to one side and concentrate on their job. "Then probably after the game, going back on the bus, their mind will wander back to the sad events. "For anyone who knew him, Gary was an ultimate professional himself." Blackburn have David Dunn available, the midfielder returning after serving a one-match suspension, while full-back Michel Salgado could make his comeback from a hamstring problem. Rovers have other defenders on the mend, with Kean hopeful that Christopher Samba and Martin Olsson (both hamstring) will be fit for the clash with Swansea. Ryan Nelsen (knee) is back in training but not yet ready for first-team action.
