Shinji Kagawa and Keisuke Honda scored a goal each Wednesday to give Japan a 2-1 lead over Italy at halftime in the Confederations Cup.

Honda scored the first goal from the penalty spot in the 21st minute after Shinji Okazaki was brought down by Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon following a poor backpass by defender Mattia De Sciglio.

Kagawa made it 2-0 in the 33rd after a poor clearance was looped back into the Italy area. With Giorgio Chiellini and Riccardo Montolivo surrounding him, Kagawa managed to turn and shoot with the Italy defenders helpless.

Daniele De Rossi pulled one back in the 41st, heading in a cross from Andrea Pirlo.
