Sanfrecce Hiroshima says Japan defender Tomoaki Makino has agreed to join Cologne, becoming the fifth Japanese player in the Bundesliga.

The J-League club announced the move Thursday on its website but didn't disclose the length of the deal or if there was a transfer fee involved.

Shinji Kagawa (Borussia Dortmund), Atsuto Uchida (Schalke), Makoto Hasebe (Wolfsburg) and Kisho Yano (Freiburg) also play in Germany's top division.

The 23-year-old Makino has spent all five seasons of his career at Hiroshima, which finished seventh in the recently completed season.
