FLORENCE, Italy (AP) A moment of silence will be observed before Italy's European Championship qualifier against Malta for the European migrant crisis.
Italian football federation president Carlo Tavecchio says he asked and received permission from UEFA President Michel Platini for the observation for the match on Thursday in Florence.
The two Mediterranean countries have been hard hit by the crisis, with a constant flow of migrants arriving in Italy, and Maltese forces helping out in the EU mission to rescue migrant boats in distress.
Tavecchio says the observation will be ''a sign of the support and sensibility of the football world over the migrant tragedy.'' He adds the decision was taken together with the Maltese federation.
