Inverness retained their position at the top of the Scottish Premiership by beating a disappointing Dundee United 1-0 at Tannadice.

Terry Butcher's on-form team maintained their 100 per cent start to the new SPFL campaign thanks to striker Billy McKay's first-half opportunist strike.

McKay struck the only goal of the game in 20 minutes and the Highlanders should have won by more but will be satisfied with their impressive start, while their lackluster opponents look as though they have a lot of work ahead of them this season.

After the match, Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara put his players on notice and urged his squad to take more responsibility after watching them endure another disappointing afternoon at Tannadice.

McNamara added: "I think it's important to get the fans behind us whenever we play at home. But we were sloppy in a lot of our play and the players need to be brave. That was the most disappointing thing about today's performance.

"They need to take responsibility more because in the times we did that we passed the ball around and caused them problems But there was not enough of it which was frustrating for everyone."

Partick Thistle produced a superb display to beat Ross County 3-1 at Global Energy Stadium.

Steven Lawless hit a double early in the second half after Kris Doolan had opened the scoring. Graham Carey grabbed a consolation goal for County with a deflected shot but there was no way back.
