Tottenham midfielder Steven Pienaar has been included in South Africa's squad for this month's friendlies against Ivory Coast and Zimbabwe.

Pienaar was called up by Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane on Thursday after the South Africa captain and playmaker missed the final part of the failed African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with knee and groin injuries.

Pienaar was one of nine overseas-based players to make Mosimane's 28-man group, with Crystal Palace midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi also returning from injury.

South Africa plays Ivory Coast in the annual Nelson Mandela Challenge on Nov. 12, then travels to Harare to face neighbor Zimbabwe three days later in preparation for qualifying for the 2013 Cup of Nations and 2014 World Cup.
