Tottenham right back Alan Hutton requires knee surgery and is likely to miss the rest of the season, adding to the club's defensive problems.
Spurs say Sunday that scans show the Scotland defender tore his lateral meniscus in training on Thursday and is set to miss the final two months of the season.
It is a further blow to manager Harry Redknapp, who is currently without a host of defenders with pivotal matches approaching in the Premier League and in Europe.
Central defenders Jonathan Woodgate, Ledley King, William Gallas and Younes Kaboul are all injured.
Tottenham plays Real Madrid in a two-legged series in the quarterfinals of the Champions League over the next two weeks and is fifth in the league with eight matches remaining.
