The Brazilian football federation says Inter Milan midfielder Philippe Coutinho has been dropped from Brazil's under-20 squad because of a right leg muscle injury.

Coutinho had been summoned to join Brazil's squad for the 2011 Under-20 South American championship, which begins Jan. 16 in Peru. The tournament will award two spots for next year's Olympic Games in London.

Inter Milan doctors told the Brazilian federation that the player will need two more weeks to fully recover from his injury.

Coutinho will not be replaced as coach Ney Franco still has to cut some players from the squad currently training in Brazil.
