Huub Stevens replaces Armin Veh as new coach of Stuttgart

Huub Stevens has returned as the new head coach of Stuttgart.

The 60-year-old takes up the position with immediate effect and replaces Armin Veh, who resigned following Sunday's defeat at home to Augsburg.

That 1-0 home loss left the Swabians rooted to the foot of the table with just nine points from 12 matches.

The Dutchman rescued Stuttgart from relegation last season, and has extensive Bundesliga experience. This will be his sixth job in the league.

Stevens coached Stuttgart for the last 10 matches of the season but then left, citing ''personal reasons.''

A statement on the club's official website said: "Huub Stevens is the new head coach of VfB. The 60-year-old takes office with immediate effect and will lead the team training on Tuesday afternoon at 15.00."

Veh had returned to the club he led to the Bundesliga title in 2007 after leaving Frankfurt in the summer but took full responsibility for the poor start made by Stuttgart.

After handing in his resignation, Veh said: ''It was a very difficult step for me to take because this club and team have a place in my heart.

''But I had to act like this because I am convinced it is the right step to take.

''This team is better than its league position and nine points from 12 games are just too few, and I am responsible for that.

''I and we have just been lacking that little bit of luck you need in many tight games. I'm sure that the team will start picking up points soon.

''I would like to thank the club's management, particularly the president, for all of the faith they have shown in me.

''It is also particularly important to me that I thank the fans. They have given us fantastic support.''
