Andy Carroll, who had his car torched after being bailed on an assault charge earlier this week, powered a header past Robert Green to seal the win in the 69th minute after Kevin Nolan had cancelled out Carlton Cole's first of the season. Hughton told Sky Sports 2: "It's even more satisfying because we came from behind. We played incredibly well against a team that's a big, powerful team. "It's been a tough week for us. What we do have in this camp is a lot of character, a lot of spirit. The more we seem to be tested, they seem to come up trumps. I thought they were excellent. "It's a nice feeling today. It's been a tough week and it's a tough place to come. We thoroughly deserved it." Of Carroll's contribution, he added: "He didn't have to repay anything to us. "He's a young lad and he's learning the game. He's not the finished article yet. "He's got a fair bit of of learning to do. The best place for him is out there (on the pitch)." Midfielder Joey Barton, who was named man of the match after providing the crosses for both goals, hailed his side's resilience to battle from a goal down. He told Sky Sports 2: "We always give ourselves a mountain to climb. To be fair to them they could have been 2-0 up before we even got into first gear so from that side of it it's disappointing. "The lads showed great resilience again. Last week against Wigan we gave them a two-goal start and managed to claw them back. "We were fortunate today that once West Ham scored they just lulled a little bit and we were able to take advantage of that. We've always got goals in us - it's just keeping them out at the other end." The result catapulted Newcastle nine places up the table to ninth while the Hammers remain rooted to the foot of the table. "West Ham's not an easy place to come," Barton added. "It's a fantastic away win. "Any away win in the Premier League is massive and we needed that to get our season going again."
