Football Federation Australia has hired Holger Osieck of Germany as head coach of the national team.

FFA chairman Frank Lowy announced the signing Wednesday via video conference from Slovenia, hours before kick off in Australia's friendly against the hosts.

Osieck was an assistant to Franz Beckenbauer with Germany's national team in 1990 and has had stints as coach of the German national youth team, as Canada's head coach and as director of FIFA's technical department.

Osieck replaces Pim Verbeek, who took Australia to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where the Socceroos were eliminated in the group stage following a win, a draw and a 4-0 loss to Germany.
