Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain has had back surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital to repair a herniated disk.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Richard G. Fessler operated Tuesday with the assistance of Dr. Carlos Diez, Real Madrid's head of medical services, and Argentina national team physician Dr. Daniel Armando Martinez.

Real Madrid said Higuain would be discharged Wednesday.

The 23-year-old, a starter for Argentina's World Cup team, has not played since Nov. 20 because of the injury, which the team originally announced as a hernia. He has seven league goals this season and 10 overall in 17 matches.
