Herrera names Vela, Chicharito to Mexico's Gold Cup roster

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) confirmed Friday the Europe-based players who will join El Tri at July's Gold Cup.
La Liga forwards Carlos Vela of Real Sociedad and Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez of Real Madrid headline the group of 11 players. Those players will be joined by a dozen domestic-based players to fill out Mexico's side in the CONCACAF championship.
In addition to Vela and Chicharito, sibling duo Giovani and Jonathan dos Santos of Villarreal are headed for the United States.
Coming off a season that saw him start regularly for a UEFA Champions League quarterfinalist, Hector Herrera of Porto headlines the midfield along with veteran Andres Guardado, who was named the Eredivisie player of the year by many Dutch media outlets for his showings with PSV. Another Dutch standout, Jesus "Tecatito" Corona, is included as the only player who will be on Mexico's teams both at June's Copa America and the Gold Cup a month later. Mexico is attending the Copa America as an invited team.
Mexico's defense at the Gold Cup will be anchored by Hector Moreno, fully fit after missing time because of an injury suffered at the World Cup. Herrera's Porto teammate Diego Reyes will likely play alongside Moreno in the center of defense. Watford outside back Miguel Layun is confirmed to be in the squad after a winter transfer from Club America.
Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has seen very sporadic playing time at Malaga, but Mexico manager Miguel Herrera still sees him as the nation's No. 1. Ochoa's presence in the squad also was confirmed Friday.
Mexico begins its Gold Cup campaign July 9 with a group stage match against Cuba before Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago to round out the group stage.
