Hammers boss eyes reinforcements

Zola wants to add more firepower to his struggling squad and he has been linked with moves for former Hammers striker Marlon Harewood and Stoke targetman James Beattie. But the Italian is still in the dark over West Ham's financial situation as debt-ridden owners, the Icelandic bank Straumur, continue negotiations over a potential sale. Zola has arranged talks with the club's directors to discover whether there is money available for reinforcements or whether he will have to sell before he can buy anyone. The Hammers boss is desperate not to lose any of England quartet Carlton Cole, Scott Parker, Robert Green or Matthew Upson, who have all been linked with big-money moves away from Upton Park, although West Ham are yet to receive any firm bids. Zola said: "I will have an update next week about this. I think we are going to have an important meeting next week when we can see what we can do. "We will try and do something. I can't be very specific but we would like to do something to make this team better. "Certainly everybody knows we are lacking strikers right now, so that would be one of the places where we're looking." Despite the club's uncertain financial footing and the lowly league position, Zola remains confident he can persuade Cole, Parker, Upson and Green to stay at Upton Park. "I know I have good players in my team and it is normal that teams are looking for them. I am confident we can keep our best players," he said. "I don't think we have had any enquiries so far. I haven't been told so. I am confident I can keep them here. "I don't deal with these things (transfers). I am just dealing with the players we have and I try to make them happy to stay here." Straumur insist they are in no rush to sell the club after receiving a moratorium on their debts until September. By extension, that also suggests they are under no pressure to cash in on major assets this January. But midfielder Valon Behrami recently stated the off-field uncertainty was beginning to affect the players' performances and Zola wants the situation to be finalised as soon as possible. "I think it would be good for everybody. It would stop so much speculation. For me to get involved in this speculation is not good for me and not good for the team," said Zola. "In two days' time I have a very big match against Wolves and for me to talk about the players that might come in or that may go out certainly won't help the situation. "What matters to me is that we win the game on Sunday, which is vital for us." West Ham are expected to welcome Mark Noble and Parker back into the side for the basement battle after both missed last weekend's FA Cup defeat by Arsenal. Guillermo Franco and Jonathan Spector are also available again as West Ham chase a victory on Sunday that would lift them above Wolves. "I said it once and it brought good fortune to us, so I repeat it. Yes, it is a six-point game," added Zola.
