Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola has indicated that the Catalan club could make a bid to sign Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

England international Rooney is at the centre of a sensational transfer saga after it emerged on Tuesday that he wanted to leave Old Trafford.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that the forward has made it clear that he has no intention of agreeing a new contract with last season's Premier League runners-up.

Arch-rivals Manchester City and Chelsea have been linked with Rooney as a result, while Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he would like to sign the former Everton player, who turns 25 on Sunday.

Defending Spanish champions Barcelona are also thought to be considering a £25million bid in the January transfer window and Guardiola is an admirer of Rooney.

"He is one of the greatest players in the world as there are very few players with his qualities," the Barcelona boss is quoted as saying in The Sun.

"He's a player I admire very much."
