Greece's Torosidis expects Argentina to go for win

Greece defender Vassilis Torosidis expects Argentina to be going for victory in the teams' final group match at the World Cup, even though the South Americans only need a draw to guarantee progress.

For Greece, even a victory may not be enough to guarantee a place in the second round. Any other result would severely dent its chances.

Torosidis is set to play in Tuesday's Group B match against an Argentina that won its two opening games, playing some of the most impressive football of the tournament so far.

``I don't think Argentina will play indifferently,'' the 25-year-old said. ``Nobody comes to these games without wanting to win ... Argentina is one of the favorites in this tournament with top-rated players. So what we have to do us just play football - 11 on their side, 11 on ours, it's as simple as that.''

Torosidis scored the second-half winner in Thursday's 2-1 win over 10-man Nigeria that gave Greece its first ever World Cup goals and points.

``It's a special feeling (to score in the World Cup), that's for sure. But it's victory that really counts, not who scores,'' Torosidis said.

Greece's first win went some way toward improving the country's dismal World Cup record - three straight defeats without a goal in 1994, and an opening 2-0 loss to South Korea in South Africa.

Sixteen years ago, Greece lost its opener to Argentina 4-0, with a hat-trick from Gabriel Batistuta and the fourth coming from current coach Diego Maradona.

On Friday, striker Dimitris Salpingidis said the win had lifted team spirits.

``We're all really happy and the atmosphere is great,'' said Salpingidis, who scored Greece's opening goal Thursday. ``When you lose, you try and understand your mistakes. Today we didn't talk about anything.''

In Athens, sports newspapers changed their tone after days of heavily criticism about the national team and coach Otto Rehhagel being overly defensive and fielding players out of position.

``Lions win 2-1,'' headlined the daily Exedra. ``Greeks play with heart, soul and ego after international criticism.''
