Grant: Cole can fire England

Last season Cole made five appearances for his country but he has not figured for the Three Lions shirt year owing to his struggle with form and fitness at West Ham. The 27-year-old looked set to leave Upton Park in January after he started the season poorly and fell out of favour with Grant after criticising the Hammers boss' tactics after the club's 3-0 loss at Liverpool in November. But the former Chelsea striker has enjoyed something of a renaissance recently, scoring five in his last six games to help drag West Ham to the edge of the relegation zone. Cole now has 11 goals to his name this season and his manager tipped him to break his goalscoring record of 12 strikes in a season last week. Grant heaped praise on the striker for his determination to get through his dry patch, and now thinks he should be a contender for a place in Capello's team for England's Euro 2012 qualifier in Cardiff on March 26. "I think he can start thinking about England again. When he is in good form, he can be good for England," Grant said. "When he was not in good shape, he applied himself. He did much more than he did before. Some players, when they are not in a good situation, they have their head down and train less but he has done very well. "He trained harder than he had ever trained before when he wasn't in form, he was more serious than he has been in any aspect before, and also he showed that even when you are not in a good time then you can improve yourself if you do the right thing. "He has shown that by scoring a lot of goals."
