Gomez agent plays down Viola deal

The agent of Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez has denied suggestions his client is heading to Fiorentina, although the chances of him leaving the European champions remain high.

The 27-year-old Germany international struggled to hold down a regular starting berth in the Bayern team last season after missing much of the first half of the campaign injured.

Mario Mandzukic's form also meant he was only second choice under Jupp Heynckes, and the chances of that changing under Pep Guardiola next season appear slim.

Fiorentina are one club understood to be interested in his services to replace Stevan Jovetic, who has expressed a desire to leave Florence this summer, but they face competition from Serie A rivals Juventus and Napoli.

Reports yesterday claimed Fiorentina had won the race for Gomez, although his agent Uli Ferber told Sport1 television that was not the case.

"That's not true," he said when asked today.

Nevertheless, Gomez's days as a Bayern striker appear to be numbered with Ferber expecting to reveal the identity of his new employers within 10 days.

"It's not going to be a major assignment (finding a new club)," he said.

"But one thing is for sure - he will only go to a club where he will be a first-choice striker."

Gomez has scored a total of 113 goals for Bayern in 174 games since joining from Bundesliga rivals Stuttgart in 2009.
