Godin inks new Atletico contract

Atletico Madrid has given Diego Godin a three-year contract extension that keeps the Uruguay defender at the club until 2018.
Godin arrived at the Sanchez Pijuan from Villarreal in August 2010 after helping Uruguay reach the semifinal stage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The 27-year-old, who overcame a difficult start to his Atletico career to win the affection of the club's supporters, said he is delighted to extend his stay with a team he holds close to his heart.
"This is my home," Godin told the club's website. "They make me feel spectacular despite the fact that I am far away from my country, home and family. What can be better than being here with people who love you and make you feel like one of them."
Godin has emerged as an important player for Diego Simeone's men, playing a pivotal role in the Atletico side that won the Europa League in 2012 and the Copa del Rey in May this year. His form this season has helped Atletico win their opening three Champions League group matches and maintain their fine league form which sees them trail current La Liga champions Barcelona by just a point.
"He is a very important player on the field and he strengthens the consistency of the group inside the dressing room," added the club's sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero. "We will continue to back the squad we have and maintain the group that is offering us such joy."
