Ryan Giggs prolonged his trophy-laden Manchester United career into its 21st year by signing a 12-month contract extension on Friday.

The 37-year-old former Wales winger, who has made a club-record 862 appearances for United since signing professional terms in 1990, is now tied to the Premier League leader until the summer of 2012.

''It's great to know I'm still contributing to the team's success and I feel I've got a lot to offer on and off the pitch,'' said Giggs, who has been one of United's best players this season.

''This is an exciting time to be involved with so many good, young players coming through.''

Giggs, who made his first-team debut for United in March 1991, was one of the most decorated players in British football, having won 11 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, four FA Cups and three League Cups.

United manager Alex Ferguson described Giggs ''as a marvelous player and a wonderful man.''

''To have the desire and the ability to play at the top level in such a physically demanding position at his age requires a special person,'' Ferguson said.

''He is still turning in man-of-the-match performances and his experience is so vital for the younger players in the squad.''

Giggs has made 24 appearances for United this season, scoring three goals - including the winner against Liverpool in a 1-0 victory in the third round of the FA Cup.
