German Football Federation (DFB) president Theo Zwanziger says he will not stand for re-election when his current term ends, and could step down as soon as next year.

Zwanziger announced his decision on Friday, with the 66-year-old telling the DFB's website that it was ''well-known that I actually didn't want to run for office last year.''

Although Zwanziger's term runs until 2013, he told the DFB that he is prepared to step down already in October 2012.

Zwanziger joined the DFB in 1992, and was joint president between 2004 and 2006 before assuming the position on his own. He joined FIFA's executive committee this year.
