Los Angeles Galaxy defender Gregg Berhalter plans to retire at season's end after an 18-year pro career.
Berhalter said Wednesday that he feels the timing is right for him to end his playing career and start focusing on becoming a coach. Since January, the 38-year-old has been a player-coach, joining Bruce Arena's staff in addition to his role as a central defender.
Berhalter has been out with a right foot injury since Aug. 25. He was limited to 12 games this season because of injuries.
He joined the Galaxy in April 2009. He had playing stints in Britain, Germany and Holland, and made 44 appearances with the U.S. national team. Berhalter was a member of the 2002 and 2006 World Cup squads.
