French Ligue One Roundup, Aug. 14

Marseille's nightmarish start to the season continued as the defending champion suffered a second straight defeat in the French league with a 3-2 loss at Valenciennes on Saturday.
Rennes beat Nancy 3-0 to top the standings with four points after two rounds.
In other games, it was: Brest 1, Auxerre 1; Lorient 1, Nice 2; Saint-Etienne 3, Sochaux 2; Arles-Avignon 0, Lens 1.
The match between Monaco and Montpellier was postponed because of heavy rains that damaged the pitch.
Gael Danic put Valenciennes ahead with a close-range shot in the 47th minute.
Gregory Pujol doubled the lead in the 53rd, powering a header that looped over Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, and made it 3-0 in the 62nd after some fine work by Gaetan Bong on the left flank.
Taye Taiwo converted a penalty kick in the 82nd to pull one back for Marseille, and Andre Ayew cut Valenciennes' lead to one in the 85th to revive hope but Marseille could not find the equalizer in the last minutes.
Marseille seemed to lack focus on the pitch amid speculation over the departures of Mamadou Niang and Hatem Ben Arfa respectively to Fenerbahce and Newcastle.
"There was an earthquake in the dressing room with the Mamadou case that had a negative impact on the squad," Marseille coach Didier Deschamps told the club's website. "We will have to reverse the trend with more positive waves."
Marseille announced after the match that Niang will join Turkish club Fenerbahce.
Niang was the top striker in the French league last season while Ben Arfa, who refused to train with the squad this week, scored the consolation goal in France's 2-1 loss to Norway in Wednesday's friendly.
"We were too lax defensively and we were not efficient offensively," Deschamps said.
Marseille played without the injured Souleymane Diawara and Stephane Mbia. Gabriel Heinze and Leyti N'Diaye had to deputize for the two defenders.
"Mbia and Diawara are the starting pair of centerbacks," Deschamps said. "It's tough to replace them although I don't want to blame Heinze and N'Diaye."
Valenciennes has four points while Marseille dropped to 19th place without a point.
Marseille lost 2-1 to promoted Caen in the opening round last weekend.
In Nancy, the host team was down to 10 men by the 13th after Alfred N'Diaye was sent off for fouling Victor Hugo Montano, who was clean through on goal.
Rennes' numerical superiority paid off in the second half.
Montano played a one-two with Jerome Leroy before slipping the ball past Nancy goalkeeper Gennaro Bracigliano in the 49th.
Montano set up the second goal in the 58th, pulling the ball back for Yacine Brahimi, who netted into the top corner.
Ismael Bangoura sealed the win in the 86th on a counterattack.
In Brest, Nolan Roux outjumped the Auxerre defense to head home in the 26th.
But Auxerre midfielder Benoit Pedretti leveled with a direct corner kick in the 83rd.
Auxerre, which finished third in the league last season, has two points while promoted Brest earned its first point.
In Lorient, Yann Jouffre put the hosts ahead with a long-range strike in the 11th.
But Nice equalized the following minute with a header from Ismael Gace.
Loic Remy notched the winner from close range in the 70th to help Nice go level on points with Rennes in the standings.
In Saint-Etienne, the hosts took the lead with an own-goal by Sochaux defender David Sauget after four minutes.
Loic Perrin converted a rebound in the 57th and flicked home a headed pass from Yohan Benalouane in the 64th to give Saint-Etienne a 3-0 lead.
Sochaux fought back with a 30-meter drive from Ryad Boudebouz in the 66th.
Marvin Martin scored a second for Sochaux with a low shot in the 67th.
But Saint-Etienne held off a late charge from Sochaux to preserve the win.
In Avignon, David Pollet nodded in a free kick in the 69th for Lens.
On Sunday, Paris Saint-Germain faces Lille, Bordeaux hosts Toulouse and Lyon visits Caen.
